HOUSING + COMMUNITY

EL SEGUNDO BARRIO, EL PASO, TX
Located in El Paso, TX, El Segundo Barrio is a neighborhood known as a starting point for many that make their way to the United States through the southern border. The sense of community plays a main and important role in the growth and survival of those within the neighborhood. It is a new place for people who are trying to make a better way of life, maybe escaping turmoil or just searching for a new opportunity that can build up from however they’re starting.

A major factor within El Segundo Barrio is income. Here, the median income sits at around $14,000 per year, significantly lower than the rest of El Paso. This creates challenges for those living in the neighborhood, where low income means things such as transportation, housing and employment can be scarce.

We examine how to improve the places people live through what we can build, while maintaining the sense of community within a neighborhood that is often overlooked.

The structure shape takes inspiration from a river bay that you may find in the near Rio Grande, allowing people to flow in and interact with what the area has to offer.
The lower floor will serve as space for businesses, while the upper two levels serve as housing for those who live within the community.

Each dwelling will be fitted with large glass windows, allowing a sense of openness within the community.
The walls within the public space of the structure allow for local artists to showcase their work within their community.
