ARTIST SPACE
EL MALPAIS NATIONAL MONUMENT, GRANTS, NM El Malpais is an area of land consisting of desert and ancient lava flow that stretches along the western part of New Mexico. The name, which translates to “The Badlands,” comes from Spaniard settlers who attempted and had difficulty crossing the land, as the harsh terrain of volcanic rock and dry desert heat made it nearly impossible for those who weren’t acclimated to the area to explore the area.
As we look upon the beauty, we imagine a space that would be fit for an artist within the desert of western New Mexico. A space for a designer, to look over the vastness and calmness of the desert through a large studio, with a gallery at the entrance, connected along a giant monumental structure that contrasts with the rugged landscape.
